Exciting Happenings

"Come Away With Me"
40 x 40, oil

So excited to announce that I've been asked to be represented by the Shain Gallery in Charlotte, NC.
I've admired this gallery for several years and I'm so honored to be a part!

Canvas Reproduction available exclusively through Kate Spade, NY

I was thrilled that Kate Spade New York wanted to offer my painting through their line of home decor.  I love the little write up they include with my painting on their website:

"this vintage beauty is like a treasure you unearthed at a brooklyn flea market on a beautiful summer day. (if you want to steal that story, your secret is safe with us.)"

"My Love"
accepted into the Annual Juried American Impressionist Society National Show

Always an honor to be selected by a panel of master and signature artists of this group!
This painting is 30 x 30 in a beautiful custom frame, $2350.

Teaching has been a wonderful experience for me to meet so many other artists.
We're all trying to get better and do the best we can do.
I'm headed to Huntsville, Alabama next week to teach two workshops!
I just found out there were some last minute cancellations, so if interested, please contact Kristi or Suzanne by clicking here.

Bad Art

18 x 24, oil
A recent commission that I love... with the reference photo below
Isn't she adorable?

So why did I title this blog post "Bad Art" ??

Last week, I worked on a 30 x 20 painting of some beautiful purple irises that my mother brought me from her garden.

You will never ever, ever see that painting.

At a recent workshop I was teaching, I was being asked questions while painting my demo.  With the easy questions, I can keep painting and answer.

"What size brush are you using?"
"How did you mix that color?"

But every now and then, I get asked a question that makes me stop and think about what to say.

"Gina, do you think there is such a thing as BAD ART?"

I kept painting probably for about ten seconds, buying time.

And this was my answer.

"Yes.  And a lot of it is in my basement."

And here's something else most people are surprised to hear:

"I have destroyed hundreds of paintings."

That painting that you only see the edge of above... with the setup of purple irises.  BAD ART.
Some paintings I thought were pretty good at one time, I no longer like them.  I found a painting one day that I remember being so proud of after I finished it... and believe me... Oh, it's horrible.

I think that's what keeps me going.  I want to keep getting better. And I think most artists will agree with me.  It's so exciting to finish a painting and be happy with it.  And those "bad art" paintings that I still produce make the ones I'm happy with even better (like the one at the beginning of this post... I love that painting!)

Even though I'm now teaching workshops, I still try to take a workshop every now and then from an artist I admire.  Not to learn to paint like them, but to learn from them.  To be inspired.  To become a better teacher.  And to be around other artists trying to get better.

Thoughts on Commission Work

"Price and Jax" 18 x 18, oil

This is a painting I just finished up last night... I've taken my time with it, as it is a commission piece. When taking custom orders, I feel it's very important to communicate with the customer to find out as much about his / her vision as possible. One last minute detail I found out was that the steps were important to include. I was planning on making the steps more like an uphill path, to simplify the composition and put more focus on the boy and dog. I told my plans to do such and then was asked to please include the steps, as this was a special place that the family visits.

A note to my artist friends who read my blog:  In teaching my workshops, I've found that one of the questions I receive often is about mixing my colors.  95% of the time, I only use four tubes of colors plus white.  Those colors being cadmium red medium, cadmium yellow lemon, ultramarine blue, and cerulean blue. If you notice the colors in the steps on this painting, you'll see all the different combinations of gray.  I like this effect in paintings, and is the reason I don't just use a tube of gray paint.... rather, I mix my grays and therefore have subtle variations that I believe add to the painting.

Made in His Image

To me, there's a fine line between confidence in one's abilities, and confidence with humility. I really struggle with the whole self promotion as an artist. I'm constantly putting myself out there, and sometimes it seems awkward, as if I am saying, "Look at me, look what I can do," and I hate that feeling. But then one day, I read this verse in Proverbs about the virtuous woman... "she sees that her merchandise is good..." Proverbs 31:8.  And I realized, this ability is given to me, and I can glorify God in using it. I am able to make money doing something I love, while also sharing the joy and beauty of God's creation. We are made in His image, and He is the Creator of all. I believe we all have that desire to create... decorating, writing, cooking, sewing, woodworking... There is a great satisfaction at the end of the day to look at a day's work and say, "It is good." Just as He did at the end of each day of Creation. So that is my aspiration that I am sharing with you, that I strive to live a quiet life, working with my hands for His glory, not mine.

A Time to Love

"A Time to Love"
36 x 36, oil

"To everything there is a season..."  And yes, there is a time to love.  So make time to love.

I speak to myself as much as to you. We can get so caught up in this world and the business of it. The trends. All the hype. The politics. All the worry. Rush here. Don't be late. Don't forget. Make lists and lists and always carry your calendar.

But make sure, you find the time to love.

Find someone today that needs a little extra love. Call them, text them, email them... just check in. I have found it's pretty hard to have a bad day when I'm thinking about others and not myself.

Slow down and smell the roses.  And find a time to love.

Hello Again

"Hello Again"
30 x 30, oil on gallery wrapped linen canvas
Available here:

One of my resolutions for the new year is to get back to writing.  I love to write and share stories, but somewhere along the way a small voice told me no one is reading, no one is listening, no one wants to hear your stories.

But then, a few days ago... at a workshop in Columbus, Georgia, I shared a story from a blog post in the past. To see and hear the reaction of those who were listening, I realized, I need to keep sharing. If not for anyone else, I need to share for me.  That is, I need to share because of the blessing I receive from writing.  Because writing my thoughts down reconnects me with Jesus.  And hopefully, I can help someone else feel a little closer to God today with my simple little words.

This painting was a little journey for me. I sometimes push myself with different brushwork, or different color combinations... trying to grow as an artist.  Always trying to grow.

Much love from this Alabama girl to whomever may take the time to read this.
